What makes a good recruitment? No two cases were alike with either recruits or agents. But in the course of interviews conducted over more than two decades I did come to see that image of how people became spies was frequently mistaken. Fiction has the spymaster as a cold and pitiless creature, but the recruiters from secret services I have met — and who have had, in the view of their peers, the most success — were quite the reverse. And many of them insisted that the best spies signed up for the sake of a simple thing: friendship.
zeus smirks, high and mighty and cutting, and asks, what would you give? and atlas - arms trembling and shoulders shaking - thinks: what haven’t i given already?
Sometimes, you do things and you do them not because you’re thinking but because you’re feeling. Because you’re feeling too much. And you can’t always control the things you do when you’re feeling too much.
You are meant to fight. When you are sick, your body fights for its right to function. When you hold your breath, your body fights for its right to breathe. There are billions of tiny events—from the surface of your skin, down to the very cells of your body—that have to happen in order for you to be simply sitting here today. If your most minuscule parts haven’t given up yet,
cruelty is easy, and it breeds only misery. kindness is harder, and you have to be brave to give it. to be cruel, you can stay closed off from everyone, wear a mask, but to be kind, in essence, to show love, you have to make yourself vulnerable, show your true self to someone and open yourself up to rejection.
don’t you dare, for one minute, believe that my kindness makes me anything but insurmountable. i did not unzip my chest to every kind of hurt, and stagger back, wounded and alive, just to hear you call me weak for trying.
We have not touched the stars, nor are we forgiven, which brings us back to the hero’s shoulders and the gentleness that comes, not from the absence of violence, but despite the abundance of it.
He was just a little guy who dreamt of something cool happening to him. I wanted somebody who had a good heart and wanted to do something good with his life, but hadn’t been given any opportunity. So, I think fundamentally that’s what it’s about –- it’s about maximizing the potential of even the person you’ve written off. And Eggsy optimises that, really, because he goes from somebody you’d cross the street to avoid, to someone who’s deactivating a laser beam to stop Britain from being destroyed one day
He’s in this world where he has an incredibly glamorous job. But he is an everyman. He’s someone we all relate to. The question is, ‘What happens next?’ What would happen to any of us if we were in that world? What dilemmas do you face, and how do you reconcile that job with the perfectly natural desire to have the things people naturally desire in life? Eggsy’s a regular guy. And he wants regular things. And how do you make that work when you’re an international spy?
Amidst the rubble of the Kingsman tailor shop, Eggsy and Mark Strong’s Merlin — two of the only people to survive the high-stakes hit — meet. [Director Matthew] Vaughn says that Eggsy’s orange smoking jacket is a sign that he hasn’t shaken off all his idiosyncracies and rough edges. “I can’t imagine Colin Firth having an orange smoking jacket,” laughs Vaughn. “It actually looks really cool. Dapper. Eggsy has his favourite orange Adidas tracksuit and says, ‘if it looks good in a tracksuit, why can’t I have it in a dinner jacket?'
